Living in today’s metropolitan world of cellular phones, mobile computers, and other high-tech gadgets is not just hectic but very impersonal. We make money and then invest our time and effort in making more money. Does it end? Not usually, because we are never satisfied.
How many times have we convinced ourselves that if only we had some more money, life would be so sweet? But then, after receiving a substantial raise, we realize that it wasn’t enough and that we need more. Then what do we need?
What Should We Do?
We need self-improvement. It’s the betterment of one’s knowledge, status, and character. Self-analysis is a must. Until we analyze our mistakes and shortcomings, we won't be able to grow. Self-improvement shapes a personality with moral values, ethics, discipline, and knowledge.
I have read many books like Robin Sharma’s — “The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari” — and they all seem to say that money is not necessary. But let’s be real, it is. Can you do without money — and lots of it? I know I can’t.
So I went to my neighbor, Naveen, for advice. He nodded and took me to the window. “What do you see?” he asked. I replied, “I see people walking, and a blind man begging for alms at the left corner.”
Then he guided me to a mirror. “Now look and tell me what you see.” — “I see myself.”
Naveen smiled. “Now you can’t see anyone else. The mirror and the window are both made of glass, but one has a thin layer of silver. That silver — like money — reflects only you. Remove the silver, and you begin to see the world again.”
I was stunned. He was right. We need money — but we also need perspective. Let’s not be blinded by our own reflection.
In this pandemic, we’ve all had extra time. Why not use it to grow — mentally, physically, and emotionally? People are developing skills like personality development, communication, digital tools, and mindfulness through YouTube, books, and apps.
Each person has unique goals — and accordingly, unique skills to master. Time is precious and never returns.
Online classes, meetings, and remote work have become the norm. While they save time, they’ve also impacted health — causing laziness, weight gain, eye strain, and more. We must strike a balance.
Look at life both ways: through the mirror — for reflection — and through the window — for compassion and awareness. Balance is key.
Instead of feeling bored, start your day with Yoga and Meditation. A healthy and happy lifestyle begins with small habits. Then take on new goals.
